Toffee Apple Pastries and 4 Minute Custard PLUS a Breville Quick Touch Crisp Microwave GIVEAWAY (RRP $449.95)!

Toffee apple pastries and four minute custard feature

This Review and Giveaway is brought to you by Breville and Marmot Inc.

I’m sure you all get those ‘I really wish there was something here at home to have for dessert tonight’ cravings, and end up settling for less with a couple of scotch fingers to dunk in your cup of tea. Not that there is anything greatly wrong with the scotch fingers and tea, but wouldn’t some homemade toffee apple pastries and 4 minute custard be so much more appealing? Zadada and I definitely thought so when I recently whipped us up this yummy dessert to satisfy those ‘I really wish’ cravings.

Would you believe me if I told you the entire dessert pictured above (you’ll find my recipe plus a brilliant GIVEAWAY further down the page) was whipped up in my newly gifted Microwave from Breville? I would understand if you were doubting my ability to cook puff pastry in a microwave, I mean what kind of normal microwave cooks pastry crisp? That’s exactly what I was thinking when I applied to review the Breville Quick Touch Crisp Microwave. This new piece of microwave technology hitting the market had me very intrigued indeed, so when I got confirmation to say I’d been approved to take part in the review plus give a microwave away (you read it right, a giveaway!!!), I was rather excited!

I informed the kidlets and Zadada there was a microwave on its way to us that could toast sandwiches, make pies crispy, toast nuts as well as do all the standard things microwaves do! The kidlets said ‘really?’ and Zadada said ‘I’ll believe when I see it’.

So the microwave (my new toy according to the kidlets) arrived…..

Breville Quich Touch Crisp

And Zadada got that toasted sandwich from a MICROWAVE!!

And (if he was lucky) was not far away from getting some ‘I really wish’ Toffee Apple Pastries and 4 Minute Custard, more on that soon.

Zadada and his breville toasted sandwich

When I asked Zadada what he thought he replied with ‘did you only make me one?’ Need I say anymore? (cheeky man, should he get dessert?)

The Quick Touch Crisp is the next thing in Inverter Microwaves – easy to use, superior results + it crisps!

I got started with the experimenting (a review was needed), I wanted to put my new toy Quick Touch Crisp Microwave to the test, melting chocolate (a must for me and my little blog), cooking my homemade chicken bites from frozen (they cooked perfectly crispy), creating Turkish bread toasties (we squeezed 3 into the pan, they cooked and crisped perfectly), reheating cheese and spinach filo rolls (delicious and crispy), steaming a quick batch of vegetables (something healthy in the mix), cooking my egg I have breakfast each day (no problem), reheating that cup of tea that’s forever going cold on me (sorted).

I love the easy to use shortcuts panel, with the ‘Melt Chocolate’ option, the microwave automatically sets itself to the correct power level, on our old microwave I had to manually adjust that, anything that makes my life faster, simpler and better in the kitchen gets a big tick from me!

Let’s just say I have a new friend in the kitchen that is very clever!

The crisping ability of this microwave is the quality that has impressed me most, this is achieved through the integrated crisper pan with an in-built preheat function that works in conjunction with the microwave and grill to crisp and brown foods that normally become soggy from standard microwave reheating such as pies, quiches, pastries (if you’re not too cheeky Zadada!) and pizza.

Miss 4 has been more than impressed with her cheese toasties!

Now back to satisfying those ‘I really wish’ cravings with my Toffee Apple Pastries and 4 Minute Custard Dessert………I could have made this little treasure via the oven and stove top but when I knew I could potentially whip it up in my new Quick Touch Crisp in less than half that time I think you know the option I decided on. All up this sweet treasure of a dessert took me 15 minutes to cook, that includes the custard too lovelies (I did say clever little treasure didn’t I?)

The end result…….. A crispy, flakey, delicious pastry puff encasing a yummy toffee apple filling, served with a good pouring of warm custard and all cooked in this clever little microwave.

For the record Zadada did get to enjoy this dessert, I made sure I gave him 2 pastries and he was very grateful (just as well!)

Recipe type: Dessert
Serves: 4
Ingredients
  • CUSTARD
  • 375ml milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ tablespoons corn flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • TOFFEE APPLE PASTRIES
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, just thawed
  • ¼ cup diced apples in syrup, drained and roughly mashed (I used the Coles brand)
  • 2 Werthers Caramels (or similar), cut in half, giving you 4 pieces
  • Mixed spice
  • 1 egg, lightly whisked
Instructions
  1. CUSTARD
  2. Combine milk, egg and corn flour in a microwave safe jug or bowl, whisk well.
  3. Place jug/bowl on glass turntable and close the door.
  4. Turn the microwave power dial down to 80% (medium high), set the time dial to 4 minutes and press start. At 1 minute intervals pause the microwave and give the mixture another quick whisk, by the completion of the 4th minute and final whisk you will have a lovely thick, smooth looking mixture. Add sugar and vanilla and whisk again to dissolve sugar and combine.
  5. Serve as is or with your favourite dessert.
  6. If you’re not using the custard straight away lightly press a piece of plastic wrap down onto the mixture (this will prevent a skin from forming).
  7. Custard is best eaten at time of making but can be kept in fridge for 2-3 days and reheated if required.
  8. TOFFEE APPLE PASTRIES
  9. Using a round 7.5 cm cookie cutter, cut 8 rounds from pastry.
  10. Position 4 of the pastry rounds on a sheet of baking paper (these will form your base), the remaining 4 pastry rounds will become the tops.
  11. Using the prompts in the SMART COOK FROZEN PIES & PASTRIES SETTING preheat the crisper pan in the upper position (this takes 3 minutes).
  12. Meanwhile spoon 1 teaspoon of apple onto the centre of each pastry round.
  13. Push a piece of caramel into each mound of apple and give a light sprinkle with mixed spice.
  14. Lightly brush edges of pastry rounds with egg, using the 4 remaining pastry rounds place each one down evenly over the top of pastry and caramel apple mixture. Press edges down firmly with a fork to seal the caramel apple mixture in (I went around each pastry round twice then flipped it over and went around again.
  15. Once the crisper pan has completed preheating carefully remove it from microwave using oven proof mitts or similar. Position the 4 prepared pastries onto the pan so they are spaced evenly.
  16. Return pan to microwave, close door, turn the amount dial to 200g and press start to begin cooking.
  17. Half way through the cooking cycle the microwave will beep and flash “stir/turn food”. Pause Microwave and carefully pull out crisper pan and turn the pastries over. Return Pan to microwave and press start to continue.
  18. When cooking cycle ends remove pan from microwave and serve pastries onto individual plates, dust with a little icing sugar and pour that delicious custard you made over the top of each pastry round.
  19. Enjoy!

  1. How can I choose only one feature when I love them all? I think it would have to be between the smart cook and grill setting because… pies and pizza and toasties, and the melt chocolate function because melting chocolate is my kitchen nemesis. Praise be to the Kitchen Gods who invented a machine with a chocolate melting function – how good is that?! Your pastries look the business and you had me at four minute custard!

That’s what I think too Sammie but it’s great to hear your thoughts and I know the gorgeous people from Breville will be loving what they are reading from your comment. As I said I have a new friend in the kitchen!
PS – that custard is the goods, so easy and so yummy! And the pastries who doesn’t love a good bit of puff!?

  2. The Melting Chocolate function is hands down my favourite feature – ok along with the fact you can make TOASTIES in it! Melting chocolate can be tricky, cook it at the wrong temperature or for a few seconds too long and you have a disaster on your hands.
These pastries look very yummy and Zadada is a very lucky man to be given two of them to enjoy!

Not really a “feature” but the first thing that struck me about the Breville Quick Touch Crisp Microwave is its aesthetics – it looks amazing (microwaves not generally known for there good looks !) but this one looks to be industrial quality , like something you would find in a 5* swanky kitchen !
I do like the idea of the “a bit more button” (30 second blast at full power) as I seem to constantly have this issue whenever I am popping something in the microwave.
Overall I think the ability to “Crisp” foods that typically would become soggy after a microwave session is the ultimate – to be able to whip up some hot chips for my kids in a matter a minutes (rather than waiting for the conventional oven to heat up , then a further 25 mins to cook !) would be awesome !
ps: the Toffee Apple Pastries look delish – hard to believe you baked them in the microwave !

The crisping function is really handy.
Those pastries were so easy to whip up in the microwave as you say there’s no waiting for the oven to preheat!

  4. Lol… the whole thing appeals to me! I’ve gone from a $10 garage sale microwave to one that was given to me by a close family friend when their mother passed away. Although it held it’s game for a few years, it has now gone into arching …. with everything. My partner says ‘did you put metal in it?’… I turned it on to prove no! So now I am microwave-less (actually, it is serving as an extra self). The feature I’d love the most is the confection grill… quick, crispy meals sounds like a dream mid week (who am I kidding- lazy weekend, I love toasties!). I am also desperately missing the ability to defrost and with BBQ season around the corner… that feature is also a favourite. Plus… it just looks so pretty in your kitchen…!! Great recipe my dear… dream combo! And your photo collection looks fabulous xo

Well the fact that it’s a Breville is a great start. My current microwave is also but from its seconds store near me. …it does seem like it’s on it’s way out. So upgrading to this mumma world be pretty exciting for this mumma! Melting choc setting, well kids, I might just start to make some treats for you! Crispy pizzas and toasties in know time, takeaway Friday just changed to awesome microwave dinners! And for the newest addition to the family, making and mostly reheating your baby food will be a treat. (Did I mention my Breville toasties maker machine might not get used anymore, but I’m sure my breville nespresso machine will enjoy me reheating my coffees in you and you will just fit into the family with my breville kettle and toaster!!!!!). Finally, I will be making your toffee apple puffs and especially be making the custard to celebrate!

It’s a battle between softening butter (which would make that last minute decision to bake cookies so much easier) and the grill function (the grill knob broke off our oven the first time I turned it 4 years ago). Better yet, let’s combine both functions for toasted hot cross buns lathered in butter!! Mmm…

Wow! What an amazing product and a great giveaway!
First of all – I can’t believe a microwave can be used to make a toasted sandwich…how things have changed!
I would have to say that the feature that appeals to me most about the Breville Quick Touch Crisp Microwave would be how intuitive it is. I am Mum to four little children, so time is always limited. The ease of the quick touch and shortcuts panel would be very handy and the way the cooking times and power levels are automatically determined is brilliant. More time to spend with the kids while still managing to cook something delicious!

My favourite feature is the Smart Cook/Grill option as it does all the thinking for you and that it looks super easy to use. I am hopeless at technology and having a lot of preset options would suit me down to the ground – no brain drain required. We were actually looking at this microwave in the shops yesterday as on our current microwave the 7, 8 and buttons don’t work. We are getting a new kitchen delivered on the 9th Oct and the microwave turned into a ‘save up again’ iten. Winning this one would just finish off our kitchen perfectly.

It certainly does do a lot of thinking for you Peta. I’m not the greatest at technology either so if I can use this clever little machine anyone can!
Exciting news about your new kitchen.

It would have to be the chocolate melting function, and to be able to make toasties would be a wonderful bonus. The fact the my current microwave is over 20 years old makes the sound of all the functions amazing :)

I’m intrigued that it can cook food without going soggy! Unfortunately I’m not the best cook so this appliance could definitely help me dish up some meals to my family that would be a lot more enjoyable. I’m also in need of a new sandwich toaster as I have a tendency to walk away and burn them (or country bake as referred to in our house) when I make them in the fry pan – I did mention my cooking skills didn’t I?

It had me intrigued too Hayley now it has me smiling when Miss 4 or 8 asks for a toasted sandwich. Love your ‘country bake’ term.

  22. Oooh scrumptious ! My husband likes his deserts ( just like yours) and how good does the crisp function sound to me. I have several Breville appliances, all reliable products, and not having to turn a hot oven on here in Queensland to bake in the summer is a winner. My oven will become obsolete. No cleaning oven racks ever again. Yay ! Thanks Breville ! ( and zamamabakes) . LOVE your recipes !

I have never seen a microwave with so many different features!! Its amazing the fact that I dont have to pull out my sandwhich press or turn the oven on to make a toastie is fantastic less screwing around. I think the best thing that stands out is that its easy to use and “idot” and “husband” friendly so hubby can wip something up with making a big mess in the kitchen when he offers to cook dinner

Hyperacusis means certain sounds bother me
So the greatest feature for me would be
The fact that on this microwave I know
Beep volume can be adjusted from high to medium to low
My current microwave has no such thing
So I try to stop it before it makes the ‘ding’
So for knowing my ear drums won’t be blown
This Breville microwave is what I’d love to own!

We do not own a microwave because the way they leave things soggy and squidgy really turns my stomach, but this wonderful breville sounds like a magic machine! Making food crispy and browning, would have to be the best features for me!

I think my fave feature is the integrated crisper pan. We always make homemade pizza on Tuesday nights, with enough leftover for Wednesday lunch. While the pizza always tastes delicious the next day, the texture of the base when reheated certainly leaves a lot to be desired! If I could have crispy pizza leftovers, that would be amazing!

  31. Ooh, this looks fabulous! My dingy old microwave could certainly use a replacement (and a clean, for that matter!!). The crispiness factor definitely looks the most appealing – I tried to reheat a croissant in mine the other day and let’s just say the result wasn’t pretty!! Apart from that, the shortcuts panel too – sounds super convenient.

Well.. What can I say, I don’t think I can choose just one feature. Breville have covered it all in this microwave. One definite plus for me would be that living in Queensland it would mean I wouldn’t need to use a conventional oven which makes the kitchen so hot in summer.. Congratulations Breville.. Gets the thumbs up from me..????

The integrated crisper pan. Given my skills in the kitchen can most kindly be described as ‘limited’, the quality of my cooking often relies on the quality of my microwave. I might not be the next Jamie Oliver with the Quick Touch, but at least my pizzas won’t be soggy!

1st it’s nice to know your hubbies like mine… Only 1… Sounds familiar & with a daughter who loves a cheese toasty & son who’s decided cheese & honey are the norm (don’t ask) it woul certainly come in handy.
No. 1 is the AS factor… Better known as “Anti-Sog” factor… Crisp I think they call it.
If it that’s not the most ingenious creation in microwave technology I don’t know what is!
A lot has changed in 15yrs hey. Crazy cool. xx
