Cake 2 The Rescue – Roller Skate Birthday Cake Review

It’s been a week of crazy busy here but good crazy busy, especially the celebration of our now Miss 8’s Birthday last Friday!

For those of you who follow me on Facebook and Instagram you may have recently caught my lead up posts to the making and revealing of Miss 8’s Birthday cake.

The little poppet caught me by surprise a few weeks ago when I asked her (as I do to all 3 kidlets on their birthdays) what type of cake she would like me to make her? ‘A Roller Skate Cake, Mum’ was the answer I got. My immediate thought was, I don’t think the Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Cook Book (my go-to kidlet birthday cake making encyclopaedia) has a roller skate cake in it??? Nope.

My next thought was actually a memory from last year, my gorgeous almost Sister-In- Law Aimee enlightened me about a lovely Birthday Cake kit site called Cake 2 The Rescue where you purchase a cake kit  of your chosen theme (there’s so many to choose from) then it comes all packaged up in a box with everything you need to make and create your selected cake. I thought I’d do a little research and see if I could find a Roller Skate cake, and hey presto after typing Roller Skate into the search bar I found myself a Roller Skate cake, I knew Miss almost 8 would love it.

I decided to send Baker Girl Lou an email to find out a little more information about her cakes for example, could I freeze the baked cake once I had made it? (that’s how I usually roll when making the kidlets birthday cakes, I feel more organised, it also ensures less crumb interference when it comes to icing time). Baker girl Lou responded to my email in no time at all confirming it was ok to freeze her cakes and not only that but she was also happy to have me review the Roller Skate Cake on my blog! (there may have been a little happy dance at our house that night!).

Miss almost 8’s cake was all sorted, all I had to worry about for this birthday cake round was collecting my mail, everything I needed minus some fridge staples….eggs, butter and milk was safely and promptly sent to our home address in one neat box. It almost seemed too good to be true, it really was that easy……the kit even includes a cake server and candles!

My only concern about making this cake was the fondant that had to be incorporated into the decorating (this was my first time working with fondant), I need not have worried because Baker Girl Lou has a fantastic bunch of video tutorials, I found this one particularly useful.

Here’s how my little cake baking adventure unfolded.

I followed Baker Girl Lou’s directions to a tee for baking the cake, once the cake had cooled I wrapped it in foil then added a layer of cling wrap and placed it in the freezer for 1 week (until cake decorating day!).

To defrost cake I placed the wrapped cake on a cooling rack over night, then unwrapped it and continued decorating as per the instructions, sometimes a few cake crumbs may stick to the foil but that doesn’t bother me because it all gets covered up with icing in the end anyway 😉

Cutting out the cake was really easy using Baker Girl Lou’s template. The main component of the icing was buttercream which I love and so does the rest of my family, Grandma and Kaymac included.

I really enjoyed working with the fondant, it added an exciting dimension to the overall finish of the cake.

Just check out the reaction I got when on the eve of her birthday I revealed Miss almost 8’s Roller Skate cake to her!

Mission accomplished I say!

The cake adventure doesn’t stop there, we celebrated Miss 8’s Birthday with an extended family dinner at our local Golf Club. The cake had to travel, so onto a firm bread board, covered with a light tea towel and into the laundry basket it went.

Confession: That would be my glass of bubbles in the picture!

This cake was delicious, so light, moist and fluffy, almost sponge like, the buttercream and fondant complimented it beautifully.

And guess what our Miss now 8’s birthday gift request was…………..

ROLLER SKATES!

We took a visit to the Epic Skate Rink on Saturday, I managed to stay upright the entire 2 hours! (not bad for 25 years later, hey?)

As Baker Girl Lou says ………’Cake 2 The Rescue was founded to put an end to the stress of creating home-made birthday cakes!! (I couldn’t agree more Lou!) So why not pick your favourite kit and give it a go. It’s your time to be the superhero of your child’s birthday party, create a cake to make the guests go “wow” and leave your child as proud as punch!!!!’

  1. Oh I just love her little face. She’s so animated. She looks absolutely pumped about that cake! You did such a stellar job. It looks amazing. I’ve heard great things about cake to the rescue. If only they make one for Clifford the dog. That’s what Miss Two is requesting for her birthday in October. I’ve tried to sway her, but no – Clifford is her best friend 😉 I’m glad your little darling enjoyed her cake and the skating. Looks like fun times x

Thanks sweet lady. Miss 8 is a very animated little lady, she’s the DQ (drama queen) of the household, hehehehe! Cake 2 the rescue’s cakes really are fantastic, so convenient and fun to make.
I still have some of my old Clifford books, I loved him when I was little too!
